Seydlitz is launched, 30 March 1912.
Therefore, the most economical cruising speed would be 12kts giving a range of 5,807nm. These values correspond to the trials draught.
Vibrations were low up to high speed and were greatest at 21kts and when going astern. They were not enough to disrupt the artillery.
In contrast to Moltke and Goeben, the admiral’s and commander’s accommodation were moved to the Zwischendeck. The Offiziere cabins were more comfortable and were remarked upon.
The arrangement of the Deckoffiziere and Aspiranten accommodations in the forward Batterie deck was very good. The accommodation for the crew was generally good, although many hammocks had to be slung in double layers. The accommodation for the medical staff in compartments II, IV and V was hot and lacked natural ventilation. The pantries, store rooms and other inventory rooms were spacious.
The ventilation of the ship’s spaces was generally good.
The artillery was fired three weeks after the ship was commissioned. The elevation pumps of the 28cm guns showed some defects. The operation of the guns was similar to that in the trials of Moltke and Goeben. It was noted that with turret D the switch room and munition handling room were located in the same space and were therefore crowded. The maximum training rate of the heavy turrets was 3° per second. During night action the use of turret A was restricted because of the effect on the bridge and conning tower. Likewise, the light battery of 8.8cm guns was of limited use during night actions and future use would be restricted to BAK.
The munition chambers were considered sufficient.
The torpedo armament trials were conducted by the Torpedo Trials Commission, but the trials report recommended an increase in the number of tubes.
All the command elements for the artillery, engines and ship’s direction worked well.
The trials with the ship’s boats were incomplete because the larger boats were not present.
The engines met their requirements in every way and the previous experience of the shipyard was advantageous. The engines were easily accessible for inspection and repairs. The boilers came in six sizes, due to the ship’s hull form, and provided the required steam with good coal consumption. The performance of the boiler room fans and feed pumps was good.
